Invisalign - The Braces Alternative

The clear alternative to braces

Invisalign® is a revolutionary method for teeth straightening, introduced to New Zealand in 2005. Teeth straightening by Invisalign® is performed using a transparent, virtually invisible aligner fitted over the teeth. It thus provides the most subtle method for teeth straightening. How does it work ?

Using the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, a series of custom made removable mouth trays (aligners) are created. These aligners apply a controlled amount of force to your teeth, causing them to gradually move. Each aligner is slightly different, ushering your teeth into the desired position. Generally each aligner fulfils its purpose in around 2 weeks.

Invisalign® is completely removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment and this also means brushing and flossing are not a problem. With no metal or sharp edges, Invisalign® is comfortable to wear and doesn’t cause allergies.

How long will Invisalign® take to work?

Invisalign® only works while you wear the aligners. We recommend they are worn full time day and night (min 22–24 hours).

Most courses of treatment last between 9 – 15 months, depending on the issues being dealt with. Once you’ve had your consultation, your dentist will be able to give you far more accurate assessment of how long they would expect the course to be.

The convenience and ease of use of Invisalign® have made it the choice of over half a million people, all of whom are celebrating amazing new smiles.

Invisalign Lite

Invisalign Lite is best described as the in-between option for patients with dental problems that do not require a full 15 month treatment.

When your dental expert judges that you are a candidate for a milder treatment because you have a moderate tooth alignment problem, they will recommend the Invisalign Lite course. The treatment time is usually around 6 to 7 months.

The treatment is identical to Invisalign Full, with the same benefits such as

  • Virtually invisible aligner trays that fit over the upper and lower teeth

  • Aligner trays are changed every 2 weeks

  • Ability to continue eating and drinking your preferred foods; continuation of normal brushing and flossing of teeth routine

  • The continual use of a retainer at night/every other night may be recommended for the maintenance of the teeth’s position thereafter.

Invisalign i7

This Invisalign course of treatments has been specially formulated for a mild case of misalignment. It has the same benefits as the standard Invisalign Full treatment but it uses only 7 aligner trays over a 3-month time period. The continual use of a retainer at night/every other night may be recommended for the maintenance of the teeth’s position thereafter.

Invisalign Teen

The Invisalign Teen treatment is similar to the Invisalign Full system but has some unique points of difference that have teen appeal in order to encourage the full use of the trays.

The teen years are the best time to correct misaligned teeth. The bones are still developing and tractable. The aversion to standard issue metals braces is neatly side-stepped as Invisalign Teen is virtually unnoticeable.

The ideal time to begin any orthodontic treatment is around the age of 12. All the adult teeth have come through but the jaw bones are still developing. It may be necessary to wear a retainer at night for a good length of time after treatment is completed in order to keep the teeth in the desired positon.

The Invisalign Teen custom-made clear aligners are fitted to the lower and upper teeth rows. They are a snug fit and a little amount of pressure can be experienced – but no pain. The aligner trays can treat teeth gaps, crooked teeth, overbites and underbites.

If there are any parental concerns that a removable brace system means that a child may not wear them as much as they should, Invisalign comes with some features that address this:

  • It has Blue Wear Indicators that fade over time with constant use. This guides the parent and dentist as to whether the aligner is being worn for the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day.

  • Invisalign Teen has a special design that allows for any new teeth that may still be erupting.

  • Up to 6 free replacement trays are included in the price of the treatment to cover potential loss or damage of the aligners.

Invisalign Full

Invisalign Full uses a sequence of clear plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth into the correct position. The customised tray is shaped to apply pressure to certain teeth as your treatment progresses.

Treatment when choosing Invisalign Full can take between 12 to 18 months with check-ups usually every 6 to 8 weeks.

As part of the treatment, your dentist may need to fit a small attachment to some of your teeth. This speeds the process up and helps the teeth reposition more efficiently. The attachments are sometimes the most visible part of the Invisalign Full treatment.

Around 90% of orthodontic patients are a good candidate for the Invisalign Full aligner system. A consultation with your dental expert will ascertain if this treatment is the most beneficial for you.
